Construction Sealants Ltd are pleased to announce the completion with Willmott Dixon on Blackpool Police HQ. Works were completed over a two-day period by two men on both internal and external areas of the new landmark.
Lancashire Constabulary have requested for a £24m contract to replace its current Bonny Street Police Station with a new, state-of-the-art police headquarters in Blackpool, which will become a local landmark.
This HQ will provide a base for local policing and immediate response teams as well as a public enquiry desk, investigations hub and 42 custody cells. It will also house a range of specialist teams serving the whole of the division.
Chief Supt Stuart Noble, Divisional Commander for Lancashire Constabulary’s West Division, said: “The new building will see a massive improvement to our working environment, providing vital support to officers and staff who deliver frontline services to keep the area safe.
It will also serve as the home for specialist teams covering the Fylde coast, Lancaster and Morecambe areas.”
The 42 cells are housed in a semi-circular precast concrete building, which links to the steel-framed office block via two access routes. The custody suite’s curved shape is dictated by the need for the main custody desk, which sits centrally, to have line of sight to each cell.
Each of the six corridors, which houses a variable number of cells, runs off this central area in a straight line, meaning there is no point that that the custody suite officers will not be able to see from their desk.
There is also a separate corridor which houses cells for vulnerable people and a designated holding cell, designed to be used when major incidents occur at events like football matches or political demonstrations.
Each cell must follow a prescriptive design so there is no way for a detainee to injure themselves. This means the walls will be completely bare, cells have to be high ceilinged, and no wires or ventilation can be accessed by a detainee, especially the mastic that we use to seal things up has been a combination of anti-pick and non-pick to stop people eating it.
